DONCASTERThe Doncaster Art Foundation is a multidisciplinary production house founded by Daniel Cross and Maryana Golovchenko to develop and produce the artistic projects of Donskoy Institute of Change. The foundation supports and realizes ambitious works that merge music, theater, film, and visual arts into a unified, exploratory practice.

Rooted in Cross’s philosophy of “Transmedial Suprematism,” the foundation’s work seeks to make all artistic elements - language, sound, movement, image, meaning, and form - interact endlessly. This ongoing dialogue drives projects that challenge artistic boundaries and foster continuous transformation.

Emerging from the long-standing Donskoy Institute of Change, the foundation provides a formal structure for artistic production, collaboration, and innovation.

Objectives of the Foundation

The Doncaster Art Foundation aims to cultivate an environment in which art functions as a dynamic and transformative process. Its primary objective is to develop and produce multidisciplinary projects that unite diverse artistic disciplines and encourage the fusion of media into new and experimental forms.

The foundation advances the philosophy of Transmedial Suprematism by promoting continual interaction among the essential elements of artistic creation—language, sound, movement, image, meaning, and form. Through this approach, it seeks to redefine traditional boundaries between art forms and foster practices that are fluid, innovative, and reflective of ongoing change.

Equally, the foundation provides a platform for collaboration and exchange among artists, thinkers, and cultural organizations. By facilitating partnerships across disciplines and contexts, it aims to stimulate creative dialogue, shared experimentation, and collective discovery. In this way, the foundation supports the emergence of new artistic vocabularies and the realization of projects that embody transformation both in form and meaning.

Activities

The foundation produces and presents artistic works that integrate music, theater, film, and visual art. It organizes performances, exhibitions, film projects, and collaborative workshops, and provides production support for experimental projects developed within the Donskoy Institute of Change and in partnership with other cultural institutions.

Finances and Fundraising

The foundation raises funds through grants, donations, partnerships, and private contributions. All financial resources are used exclusively to achieve the foundation’s objectives and to sustain its commitment to artistic innovation, collaboration, and cultural development.

Management and Use of Funds

The board ensures responsible financial management and transparency. Any surpluses are reinvested in future artistic projects. Board members receive no remuneration, only reimbursement for actual expenses incurred, in accordance with ANBI regulations.

Future Vision

The Doncaster Art Foundation aims to develop into a sustainable international platform for experimental and multidisciplinary art production. It remains committed to fostering collaboration, innovation, and public engagement with contemporary art, continuing to expand its role as a center for transformative creative practice.

	REMO/LUCE
REMO/LUCE presents a new form of vocal-magnetic music: a live electro-acoustic performance and vinyl album in which voice, tape loops, and analogue recording processes become the primary instruments. Created by Mathijn den Duijf, Daniel Cross, and vocalist Maryana Golovchenko, the project explores the meeting point of human presence and magnetic sound.

At the heart of REMO/LUCE is the voice. Fragments of song, breath, speech, and vocal harmonies are captured on looping lengths of magnetic tape, where they are layered, transformed, reversed, and reshaped in real time. Working entirely with analogue equipment, the trio builds evolving sonic landscapes from tape loops, reel-to-reel machines, percussion, and vintage recording technology.

The live performance unfolds within an immersive quadraphonic setup. Four vintage loudspeakers surround the audience, while at the centre a tape laboratory of reel-to-reel machines, delays, percussion instruments, and mixing desks generates sound before the listeners' eyes and ears. The audience is free to move through the space, experiencing shifting perspectives within a constantly evolving sound environment.

Using tape loops ranging from two to six metres, the performers record and manipulate sounds live, constructing rhythmic patterns, harmonic textures, and choirs of layered voices from a single vocal source. Vintage drum machines, tape delays, spring reverbs, and analogue effects continuously reshape the material, allowing the music to move fluidly between ambient soundscape, ritualistic listening experience, and unexpected moments of rhythmic propulsion.

For REMO/LUCE, magnetic tape is not merely a recording medium but an instrument in itself. Its instability, pitch fluctuations, hiss, distortions, and mechanical imperfections, creates a warmth and unpredictability that gives the music its distinctive character. Every performance is unique, shaped by the physical behaviour of the tape and the performers' interventions in real time.

Daniel Cross – percussion, tape loops
Mathijn den Duijf – tape effects, sound design
Maryana Golovchenko – voice, tape loops, no-input mixer

	De Echt/The Wed/

Vesillia 2.0

“It takes a village to wed…”

An immersive music theatre ritual of community and belonging.

De Echt / The Wed / Vesillia 2.0 is not a performance you simply watch - it is a shared ritual you enter.

Audience members gather at long communal tables where bread, pumpkin, song, and storytelling become the building blocks of a temporary community. The boundaries between performer and spectator gradually dissolve as guests are invited not only to witness, but also to listen, sing, knead dough, share food, and participate in a collective experience.

Inspired by traditional Ukrainian wedding rituals, the performance reimagines ancient ceremonies for a contemporary, multicultural society. Through ritual theatre, polyphonic singing, live electronics, and communal actions, De Echt explores a timely question: how do we create meaningful connection in an age of individualisation, polarisation, and increasingly digital encounters?

The 90-minute performance unfolds across ten ritual scenes. Audiences are welcomed into a festive yet intimate environment where musicians, singers, local choir members, and participants sit side by side. Traditional Ukrainian wedding songs are transformed into new compositions combining live electronics, multilingual singing (Ukrainian, Dutch, and English), and participatory theatre.

Each presentation is developed in collaboration with a local choir, making every edition site-specific and rooted in its community. Bread and pumpkin function as recurring dramaturgical symbols throughout a journey of transition, choice, hospitality, and belonging.

Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko - vocals
Pau Sola Masafrets - cello
Antonii Baryshevsky - piano, synths

	Minami-no-Tori: Film

Minami-Torishima (Southern Bird Island) is a tiny Japanese island in the Pacific Ocean where scientists believe an seemingly endless supply of rare metals lies buried in the seabed. All the metals required for smartphones, wind turbines, Teslas, and computers. These rare-earth elements (REEs) are the holy grail of the modern age. Yet they lie at great depths, and mining them would have a catastrophic impact on the largest ecosystem on Earth.

Minami-no-tori (Southern Bird) tells the story of the Prince with a Thousand Names and Faces, searching for the Pearl of Oblivion and the Pearl of Memory. Blinded by greed, he strikes a hole in the ocean floor, causing all the water to drain away and life on Earth to vanish. All that remains is the rustling of the wind.

What does mermaid taste like?
How deep would you dive?
How low would you sink?
How far would you fall?
To get what you want

The film is the result of a year-long collaboration between the Rosa Ensemble and the Netherlands Chamber Choir NXT. Under the direction of Daniel Cross, 8 singers worked to bring the story of Minami-no-tori to the stage, using Andriana Minou’s beautiful text. They learned to work with tape recorders, memorized all the music, and mastered the entire mise-en-scène. This performance formed the basis of the film. Actress Gaite Jansen took on the role of the narrator, and VHS tape became the visual counterpart to the audio tapes.

Exhibition: Minami-No-Tori
Centraal Museum Utrecht

11 September - 4 October 2026

Minami-Torishima, Southern Bird Island, is a tiny Japanese island in the Pacific Ocean where scientists believe a seemingly endless supply of rare metals lies buried 6,000 meters deep in the seabed. These are all the metals required for smartphones, wind turbines, batteries, and computers. These rare-earth elements (REEs) are the holy grail of the modern age. Yet mining them would undoubtedly cause immense damage to the oceans and marine life. Minami-no-tori laments the bittersweet reality of a society consumed by greed and ultimately destroying itself. Humanity continues to dream of more and better, only to discover that the Earth and the universe eventually reclaim control.

Minami-no-tori [Southern Bird] is not only a film but also an audiovisual installation. Visitors walk through a space featuring eight large screens. On each screen, a singer appears; together, they form an eight-part choir. They sing, “Minami-no-tori, the southern bird will guide you.” They sing, “Nothing is heavier than gold when you're drowning.” Standing at the center, you feel immersed in a sea of voices, with all eight singers equally present and equally loud, surrounding you from every direction.
